Our First Promise to You: Redefine Sexual Assault
During our first 5 weeks, we will meet with the Provost and the Advisory Committee on Sexual Assault Policies and Practices to ensure that as they finalize the new Title IX process this August, they create a broader definition of sexual assault that does not degrade or minimize the experiences of our survivors. Stanford currently employs a narrow definition of sexual assault and classifies most other experiences as "sexual misconduct" which is harmful to members of our community and discourage students from coming forward to report. Reforming Stanford's Title IX policies and procedures is of utmost important to us. Given increased national attention to the issue of sexual violence as a result of the #MeToo movement and the aftermath of the Brock Turner case, we have an opportunity to pressure Stanford to finally do right by survivors.
